A Positive Gang!
A Positive Gang!
We are a nonprofit organization focused on giving less privileged young people new choices, goals and options in life through free afterschool tutoring programs, art camps and sports camps. Ultimately, we strive to develop proficiency and subsequent confidence in the youth we serve. We want as many kids as possible to have access to our services regardless of gender identity, race, religion or sexual orientation.
2020/2021 created a new challenge for our organization. We were met with an obstacle of not being able to meet within the facilities or directly with the kids in groups. We were faced with postponing our program indefinitely or coming up with a plan B; we chose plan B. We developed a remote program of art, academics and sports that kids can do at home and interact with us via text and email. Kids are being creative and having fun with clay, mosaics, hacky sac, jump rope, math games, word games, and puzzles all from home! We are hearing wonderful things from kids, parents, school counselors and teachers about this new approach to our afterschool program. Our hope now is to reach out to kids all over the nation who are still at home who need some added encouragement or enrichment that we can send our kits. Please let us know if you know of any.
With the restriction of not being able to go into schools or buildings right now, our focus is working to get our remote kits into the homes of kids. If you know of any kids who would benefit from one of our kits, you can let us know and help us get in touch with them to mail them a kit.
We hope to be back to in-person afterschool programs and sports camps soon, as well. If you are interested in helping,
please let us know.
Whether you help through monetary donations, volunteering your time, or spreading our mission through word-of-mouth, thank you. We couldn't accomplish our goals without the help of supporters like you.
SK Alfstad is a former Army Chaplain who started Giving Adolescents New Goals in Austin Texas in 1996 and relocated to the Grand Valley in 1998 to continue this outreach program. He and Tania met that same year and she began as a volunteer for the program and they married in 2006. Both SK and Tania have a deep passion for kids and for helping them meet their full potential. SK has a long history of working with people and youth and deep compassion for underprivileged youth and a great belief in the values developed through sports and the outlets of art and academics. Tania has 25+ years of working with youth and training in Understanding Generational Poverty and shares SK's passion for kids seeing the full potential they have for a bright future. SK and Tania have 5 children, three biological and two girls whom they adopted in 2017. They have a small farm in Fruita Colorado and spend a lot of time at home with their garden and animals and love to watch their 5 develop their own talents in sports, art and academics.
